Dental treatments under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia with ICU support. Who is it aimed at, what dental interventions can be performed and types of anesthesia.

Sedation | General anesthesia

The whole range of dental treatments and oral surgical interventions under ATI-assisted anesthesia (intensive care anesthesia).

Dental interventions under sedation or general anesthesia.

The dentist operates under ATI-assisted anesthesia, at Dr, Baldea Denta Clinic in Timisoara.

You will have with you a team of specialists in Implantology Advanced Dentistry and Oral Surgery of the Dr. Baldea Dental Clinic.

Currently, these are mainly aimed at adults and adolescents.

The vast majority of treatments and surgical interventions in the field of  oral implantology can be performed with acceptable comfort for the patient, under local anesthesia. You will only feel pressure, vibrations and hear noises produced by the specific equipment.

However, there are situations when it is necessary for dental treatments to be carried out in an operating room similar to those of general surgery (but specific to oral surgery, with specific equipment and instruments), under anesthesia assisted by the A.T.I. team or doctor. (intensive care anesthesia).

What types of dental treatments can be performed under assisted anesthesia?

In Timisoara, we have the possibility to perform the entire range of dental interventions, as well as the most complex surgical interventions for bone augmentation and reconstruction or insertion of dental implants under total anesthesia or conscious sedation at the dentist.

  • • Root canal treatments, fillings, fillings.

  • • Prosthetic and aesthetic dental work (dentures, veneers, crowns)

  • • Periodontal treatment.

  • • Minimally invasive, high-precision surgical interventions assisted by the ATI team.

  • • Surgical interventions that require extended labor time.

  • • Surgical interventions with insertion of dental implants, bone and soft tissue augmentation / reconstruction on one arch (maxillary or mandibular) or bimaxillary.

  • • Laborious surgical interventions for insertion and immediate loading of the arch, respectively on the entire jaw (dental prostheses on implants).

  • “All in one surgery”
    Surgical interventions on all indicated areas of the oral cavity, respectively combining several interventions into one.

  • • Surgical interventions that involve approaching risky anatomical structures.

For oral surgical interventions such as reconstruction and/or insertion of implants, it is important that the patient has a balanced general health. That is why we collaborate with doctors from other specialties to ensure that this aspect is met.

Intravenous sedation at the dentist.

IV (intravenous) sedation makes the experience extremely comfortable. Being assisted by the A.T.I. doctor, it is safe because vital functions are monitored non-stop by the anesthesiologist with the help of specific equipment in the Operating Room.

The dentist's treatments under intravenously assisted anesthesia provide increased comfort to the patient and surgical peace to the team performing the intervention. Oral and reconstructive microsurgical techniques require delicate maneuvers under magnification, which in order to be performed require the full cooperation of the patient, who needs to be quiet and comfortable.

Types of sedation and assisted anesthesia used in dental interventions.

Before the dental intervention, the patient benefits from a pre-anesthetic consultation, and the medical team may request a specialized multidisciplinary consultation and treatment, if necessary, to ensure the safety of the intervention.

Minimal sedation (anxiolysis):

- You will have a small amount of sedative administered;

- You will feel more relaxed and less worried about what is happening around you;

- You will be awake and able to speak normally;

- You will most likely remember the treatment, but not all of its details;

Moderate sedation (conscious sedation):

- You will be given a slightly larger amount of sedative;

- You will feel very relaxed and drowsy;

- You will be sleepy, but you will be able to speak normally and follow simple instructions;

- You may remember some moments during the treatment;

- Moderate sedation should not affect your breathing.

Conscious sedation at the dentist is the most commonly used method and is doubled of local anesthesia. The patient is particularly comfortable throughout the intervention, and the surgical team has peace of mind during the operation.

Deep sedation:

- You will be given a large amount of sedative that may contain one or more types of substances;

- You will fall asleep and not speak at all for most of the treatment;

- You are likely to not remember anything during the treatment – the level of sedation will be

administered according to the needs of each patient.

Anesthesia general:

- You will be completely unresponsive and unconscious during the procedure and will have no memory of it after it is completed.

Total anesthesia at the dentist is only recommended in certain cases. Discuss the options and advantages of this type of anesthesia with your doctor.

Total anesthesia and sedation in dentistry, now available in Timisoara, offers the possibility of performing all dental treatments, surgical interventions and oral implantology, in complete safety and relaxation.

Theoretically, any patient can access the benefits of the intervention in the Operating Room with ICU assistance, the recommendations being made by the medical team together with the patient. Currently, these services are mainly addressed to adult and adolescent patients.

  • • Patients who have a fear of the dentist and who find it more difficult to overcome the fears of oral surgery under local anesthesia. This avoids anxiety states. Fear of the dentist (dentophobia) can be overcome with the help of total or conscious assisted anesthesia.

  • • Patients who cannot remain still for longer periods of time. General anesthesia at the dentist is also an option for people who cannot keep their mouths open for a longer time.

  • • Patients with associated health problems, who require additional monitoring of vital functions, but who are balanced, under specialized treatment and lead a normal life.

  • • Patients who require minimally invasive oral surgery, but with prolonged labor time and for whom local anesthesia is not sufficient for operator comfort.

  • • Patients who require complex oral surgery, performed by a multidisciplinary oral and maxillofacial surgery team and who, for comfort, need sedation intravenous.
